Detention camp Moria Lesvos Greece – the drama of Eritrea

moria-detention-camp-lesvosEritrea has one of the most oppressive regimes in the world. Criticism on the government is forbidden and opponents are arrested. Military service, which can last more than ten years, is for many a reason to flee. Deserters and conscientious objectors are cruelly punished and even their family members can be arrested…

Eritreans cannot leave the country without permission of the Eritrean authorities. They will shoot those who try to flee the country illegally.

Israel took 40,000 Eritreans as guest workers for four years. None of them got residence. Because they could not return to their homeland, Israel made a agreement with Rwanda. The Eritreans were flown there and accommodated in hotels. More or less they get passed into the hands of smugglers. And again after months of suffering, paying an enormous amount of money and being tortured on the smuggling route, they came here. Finally free…

Eritrea is 2nd on the urgency list of refugees. But in Moria, after 9 months none of them was registered. Initially they were. But after a computer failure in July they did not exist anymore. They had even no right for medical assistance.

Now they are speeding up the proces. Fudsung, who could not leave his tent for months and has been taken care for by his friend Sjon, is suddenly allowed to go to Athens for treatment. Although Fudsung cannot stand on his own feet, Sjon is not allowed to go with him…

Father and son

More than one year ago his wife, daughter and youngest son came to Greece by Rhodes and got  asylum in Sweden. Father and son are already nine months here. By the new European rules they are not allowed to join their family. Father cannot stand the cold and the conditions any longer.

This week father got permission to go to Athens. His son Yasir is not aloud to go go with him and to care for him. Probably the father will get asylum for Sweden. Yasir only can apply for asylum in Greece. The last place he like to live after those nine months of hell…

Bureaucracy

‘Sorry Yasmin. Our lives have been ruled by the military. Finally we reached Greece and thought we were free. Inside of Moria we are ruled by the military again. That the conditions are bad is one thing. That they cannot take all of us is another thing. But why they cannot speed up the process so we can look forward to a new future. They know we are not economic refugees.  When we ask them  the authorities at the camp pointing their finger to Athens. When the authorities of Athens come inside,  they point their finger at the European Union. Why they are constantly cleaning their own street without daring to face the real cause?’

Yes why…

Even their lawyer came inside the camp to negotiate, so the son could go with the father. No way!

Concentration camp

I compare the situation with the concentration camps in World War 2. People had to work long time to get killed quickly. Here, they are not allowed to do anything. For the young singles as most Eritreans are, that is hell again. They are losing their spirit and slowly but surely they are dying within. Sometimes they die literally. It is the survival of the fittest. Wonderful lads – like Danny – are using the money they receive from their families to guzzle themselves to hell. When I met Sjon and Danny in July they were sparkling guys full of optimism for their future…

moria-detention campHow deep we have sunk when we innocent people – in this case of Eritrea – who literally have gone for years through a hell from pain and suffering omit to let them rot away in detention camps like Moria…

Om Shanti – Let US live in Peace…

It is my deepest wish for today and every day – alo for 2017 – that we open our hearths and start to embrace ourselves, so we can embrace all our brothers and sisters…
